TRAUMA
When you suffer from a traumatic event the brain may not manage to process the memory properly. This can manifest itself in a range of symptoms which are distressing and debilitating, such as flashbacks, nightmares, distressing intrusive images or sensory impressions.
You can find yourself becoming hyper-vigilant and suffering from an exaggerated startled response to things which previously weren't troublesome.
You may also find yourself suffering from sleep problems, becoming irritable and excessively angry, or having difficulty concentrating.
These symptoms can lead to a growing sense of isolation. A feeling that you are emotionally cut-off and detached from others. This can result in avoiding situations, people or places that either are associated with, or remind you of the traumatic event.
EMDR works by stimulating both sides of the brain through a series of eye movements, taps or sounds while following instructions from the therapist.
This has been shown to enable the brain to properly process the trauma so you no longer feel that you are reliving it.
